IBM’s Patents Go into Facebook’s Kitty!

This is in furtherance to our earlier post on Yahoo-Facebook (FB) patent law suits. Yahoo had sued FB for infringing on 10 of its patent applications. With more number of granted as well as filed patent applications, Yahoo is well ahead of FB in terms of patent portfolio strength and seems to have a clear edge in the battle. But now, FB is gearing up for the big battle. As a part of strengthening their weapon store, FB acquired around 750 patents from the software giant IBM. The acquired patents are expected to be into various domains such as software, networking and so on.

Neither FB nor IBM has commented on this reported acquisition. However, IP world is waiting to see what is FB’s real intention behind strengthening their patent portfolio. Recent trends give a clear indication that when a company is being sued by another, it not only tries to defend the case, but also tries to counter attack and sue the enemy. Days ahead may witness furious IP battles. Lets enjoy the show….
