The legal dispute between technology giants Apple and Samsung has been nothing short of war, with thirty cases being fought ranging across ten countries. Australia had been one such country where Apple had sought to ban Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 accusing it of ‘slavishly copying’ its product, the iPad and claiming that it infringed its patents with regard to touch screen technology. Today’s decision by the country’s highest court reinstating an appeal court’s judgement lifting the ban has ensured that Samsung can make the most of the holiday season in Australia by renewing sales.
Samsung might have won this battle, but the war is far from over!
First of all, the disputes with regard to the tablet have not been settled in all countries yet. In the ones that have, the decisions have varied. Apple had managed to ban sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany and had thereafter sought for a ban on the modified product too. In the US, although Apple has suffered a set-back where a court refused to ban sales, it has made it clear that it will file an appeal.
Moreover, as an answer to Apple’s claims on the tablet, Samsung has sought to block sales of the former’s iPhone 4S in several countries, including Australia.
Despite the on-going battle, what is interesting to note that the two companies share a relationship exceeding $5 billion. Samsung counts Apple as its biggest customer and produces key parts of its phones.
