‘John Doe’- the new mantra to protect Copyrights of Producers

Delhi High Court has issued yet another John Doe order, this time for movie Speedy Singhs, co-produced by Akshay Kumar. The Producers had moved to the HC to curtail violations by a few cable operators and against unknown defendants and “restraining them from in any way displaying, releasing, showing, uploading, downloading, exhibiting, playing, defraying the movie Speedy Singhs, without a proper licence from its producers.” The order in addition to granting the remedy also restrains Copyright violations through CD, DVD, Blu-ray, VCD, Cable TV, DTH, internet, MMS, tapes, conditional access system or other media. The order isa valid till December 19, 2011.

Obtaining the John Doe order has become the latest strategy used  by most of producers in Bollywood as a step to curb copyright infringement. This mechanism can also be considered as a good business tactics as most of the revenue for any movie would be generated from its first week’s collections, By curtailing the few cable operators and unknown persons from showcasing the movie to general public at least during the first week, producers can save a lot of loss that they would otherwise incur.

John Doe orders have already been issued for films like Bodyguard, Singam, Mere Brother ki Dulhan. We shall surely see more movies to follow this league.
