RIM Settles Patent Dispute with Dolby

Finally Research In Motion (RIM) comes in Dolby’s way. RIM settled the patent lawsuit with Dolby Laboratories, agreeing to pay royalties. Dolby Laboratories had filed a law suit against RIM in mid 2011 for utilizing Dolby’s patented technologies which cover “highly efficient digital audio compression technologies which allow manufacturers and consumers to provide and enjoy high quality audio while using extremely limited amounts of transmission and/or storage space for such audio”, in BlackBerry smartphones and the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet without obtaining license from Dolby Laboratories.

After this issue, RIM signed an agreement with licensing corporation who handles Dolby licensing. As a result of the agreement with licensing corporation, RIM got permission to use Dolby Laboratory’s technology across the RIM products. RIM is also made to pay a sum of around 15 million dollars to Dolby Laboratories to settle the lawsuit. Now RIM customers can enjoy the power of Dolby systems in their handsets.
