Apple faces patent infringement suit over its Websites & iTunes

A Texas-based software company, Droplets Inc. has filed a lawsuit against Apple for infringing on its patented Web technology. The suit alleges that Apple infringes on its patent with its Apple website, iTunes, the movie trailer site and also its other web applications. Apple is not the only company targeted; even Amazon, Google, Facebook, You Tube and Yahoo are also aimed at.

The two patents, belonging to Droplets Inc., involved here are United States Patent No. 6,687,745, titled "System and method for delivering a graphical user interface of remote applications over a thin band width connection" and United States Patent No. 7,502,838, titled "System and method for delivering remotely stored applications and information." The No. 6,687,745 patent was granted in February 2004 followed by the No. 7,502,838 in March 2009. Droplets Inc. has filed against these companies in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division. The company seeks damages as well as future royalties on the use of those patents.

On another note, in 2006, Droplets also sued Adobe for infringing on patent 6,687,445 claiming that Adobe used it on its Flex product. However, in 2008 Droplets and Adobe settled the issue for an undisclosed amount.
