The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has decided to initiate legal proceedings against Monsanto, Mahyco, and other companies for biopiracy. It has been reported that the companies had used local varieties of brinjal to develop genetically modified BT varieties without taking appropriate authorization under the Biodiversity Act. The issue was brought to light by a complaint filed by Environment Support Group before the Karnataka Biodiversity Board. Leading agricultural universities such as University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and so on are also parties in the collaboration and action may be initiated against them as well.
