Google loses its bid to Apple and Microsoft for 6000 Nortel Patents
Google lost its bid to acquire Nortel’s patents to Apple lead consortium that bagged all 6,000 patents for $4.5 billion last week.
The bidding process for 6,000 patents and patent applications of Nortel began in April 2011. Google actually initiated the process with an offer of $900-million stalking horse bid. Apart from Apple there are other telecom giants in the consortium such as Research In Motion (RIM), Microsoft, Ericsson, Sony and EMC. These patent acquisitions are being seen as a big blow to Goole as acquisition of Nortel patents were necessary for Google to survive more than 45patent infringement litigations.

Considering the company’s bidding strategy on the Nortel patents, one has to wonder whether Google was ever very serious about its bid. If so, hopefully it learned its lesson: next time, instead of Pi, go with Feigenbaum’s constant ($4,669,201,609).
