Geographical Indications in India have been assuming sporadic importance. Speaking in a seminar-cum-workshop on Geographical Indications in Srinagar , Controller General Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, Shri PH Kurian, on May 30, 2011 said that the state of Jammu and Kashmir had at least 20 products in agriculture, horticulture and handicrafts that are fit to be registered as Geographical Indications and with such registrations, they have a possibility of reaching Rs 100 crore turnover. This seminar was organized by the office of the Controller General of Patents and Trade Marks, Government of India, in collaboration with Jammu & Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute. This observation by the Controller General marks a step for giving protection to products entitled to be Geographical Indications in J&K as the state economy heavily depends on marketing of such products, like moongra saffron, papier-mache and walnut wood items.Reference : http://www.greaterkashmir.com/news/2011/May/31/-jk-has-20-products-fit-for-gi-registration--23.asp
