Karnataka’s Byadgi chillies get GI tag.

chilly The chillies of Byadgi from Karnataka have been granted the Geographical Indication registration. These chillies are mostly grown in Bellary, Haveri, Shimoga and Chitradurga districts of North Karnataka. These chillies are known for their less pungent taste. The business involving Byadgi chillis has the second largest turnover among all chilli varieties of India. The oleoresin oil extracted from these chillies is used in the manufacture of nail polish and lipsticks. The application for this registration was filed by the Spices Board, Ministry of commerce and Industry, Cochin.
