EPO with Google for Patent Translation

The EPO and Google have signed a MoU on November 30, 2010 for translating patent documents. According to the agreement, the EPO will be utilizing Google’s machine translation technology to translate patent documents in the languages of the 38 countries.

A patent application that is to be filed in the EPO has to be in English, French or German. Further, if the application has to be filed in any of the 38 countries, the application has to be translated into the language of that particular country at the expense of Applicant. Considering the huge translation cost involved in getting the patent documents translated into the languages of these 38 countries or the cost involved in the getting the patent documents granted in these countries to English, the initiative taken by EPO and Google regarding patent translation will be highly appreciated and well received than the common hybrid classification system (proposed by IP5 Offices) by the patent community across the globe.
