Plant Genome Saviour Community Award to be given to five communities in India


The Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Right Authority, has decided to felicitate communities and individuals for conservation and improvement of genetic resources of economic plants in agro-biodiversity hotspots from this year. The authority said that five awards carrying prize money of Rs. 10 lakhs each would be given to farming communities, particularly tribal and rural communities. The award is called as 'Plant Genome Saviour Community Award' and a community would be selected from the bio diversity hotspots across the country for the award. In addition, five individuals would also be given award carrying cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh each for their efforts in the field of conservation and innovation. This was declared by the registrar general of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Right Authority during the awareness programme organised for farmers and scientists held at Orissa University of Agriculture Technology.
