Indian Rupee gets a new symbol

Rupee symbol newIts official now and India has joined the selected group of countries which have their own symbols to represent its currency. India’s new Rupee symbol is an amalgamation of Devanagri ‘Ra’ and Roman ‘R’ without the stem and makes India one of the few counties in the world to have a distinct identity joining US dollar, British pound-sterling, Euro and Japanese yen among others in an exclusive club.
 
Out of the  3000 odd entries, the Union Cabinet approved the design by an IIT post-graduate Dr. Uday Kumar, which will now be printed or embossed on currency notes or coins.
 
Apart from the US dollar, British pound-sterling, Euro and Japanese yen currency symbols which many of us easily recognize, there is a list of other not so well known currency symbols. The complete list of symbols may be found here along with the currency symbol map below.
